Side Effects and Risks of Green Tea Consumption

Side Effects and Risks of Excessive Green Tea Consumption:

You need to know that there are few side effects or contraindications to drinking green tea for adults. However, the following risks or complications should be explained:

  • Caffeine sensitivity – those with severe caffeine sensitivity may experience insomnia, anxiety, irritability, nausea, or abdominal pain.
  • Blood thinners – those who use blood thinners (anticoagulant medications) such as Coumadin / warfarin should drink green tea with caution because of its vitamin K content. It is also advisable to avoid green tea and aspirin, as both reduce the effectiveness of platelet clumping.
  • Other stimulants – if taken with stimulants, green tea may increase blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Consuming green tea contains high levels of active ingredients with other ingredients unsafe for health, can trigger side effects and interact with herbs, supplements, or other medications. Always check with your doctor before starting any herbal regimen or supplement.

In particular, pregnant or lactating women, those with heart problems or high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems, gastritis, or anxiety disorders should not take green tea supplements or extracts.
